Natural Attractions


The natural beauty of Ethiopia amazes the first-time visitor. Ethiopia is a land of rugged mountains(25 of which are 12,000 feet high) broad savannah, lakes and rivers. The most famous volcano has been in a state of continuous eruption since 1967. Its small southerly crater is the only permanent lave lake on the planet.


Religious Attractions


The Ethiopian Orthodox Union church, an autonomous Christian Church headed by a patriarch and closely related to the Coptic Church of Egypt, was the state church of Ethiopia until 1974. About 40 percent of the people of Ethiopia are Christians, and Christianity is predominant in the north.

DAY 1 : Addis - Gonder - (Flight)

Early morning flight to Gonder. Sight-seeing of Gondar town including the castles of King Fasilledas, his open-air bath, the monasteries of Qusquom and Debre Berhan Selassie church with its 16th century paintings and Frescoes. Return to your hotel. Lunch, dinner and overnight in Gonder.

DAY 2 : Gonder - Sandaber

Depart early in the morning from Gondar (7am at the latest), driving to Sankaber.  We will stop along the way to handle park fees, etc.  If you like, we can drop you in or around Buyit Ras for a 3-4 hour hike to Sankaber, which passes close to the escarpment edge.  Nearing Sankaber, you will have beautiful views on both sides of the escarpment ridge where you will likely see the endemic Gelada baboons.  In Sankaber, we will meet you with your supplies.  Overnight camping in Sankaber.

DAY 3 : Sankaber - Geech

From Sankaber depart into a valley, through which the Wazla (or Koba) River runs.  (This river is often dry).  Coming out of the valley you will have views of the Jinbar River waterfalls falling into the Geech Abyss.  Continuing along, you will cross the Jinbar River and ascend into the village of Geech.  Total trekking time: 4-5 hours. Overnight camping in Geech.

DAY 4 : Geech - Chenek

After an early breakfast, depart from Geech to the peak of Imet Gogo - 3926mts.  Here you’ll have spectacular views over the lowlands – one of the highlights of the trip.  As you continue to Chenek, you will pass Korbete Metia, a solid rock wall which opens up exposing beautiful views over the lowlands and the escarpment.  This is also a good place for spotting lammergeiers.  Overnight camping in Chenek.  Total trekking time: 7 – 9 hours.

DAY 5 : Chenek - Ambikwa

From Chenek continue east up a valley to Bwahit Peak, overlooking the camp from where you just came.  After crossing the Bwahit Pass, you come to a viewpoint offering wonderful views of the Mesheha  River Valley as well as your first glimpse of Ras Dashen.  From here, the path descends and passes through the village of Chiro Leba and finally leads to the Mesheha River.  Across the river, you climb back up the valley to the village of Ambikwa.  Overnight camping in Ambikwa.  Total trekking time: 6-8 hours.

DAY 6 : Ambikwa

Starting early, you will continue up the valley to the village of Mizma after which you will have a steep ascent to a ridge crest overlooking a large valley.  The path then follows along the side of the valley straight at Ras Dashen.  You will eventually reach a point where you will see three distinct buttresses.  The buttress on the left is the summit of Ras Dashen.  A pile of rocks at the top of the buttress marks the summit.  Afterwards, you return to Ambikwa for overnight.  Total trekking time: 8-10 hours.

DAY 7 : Ambikwa - Chenek

Today you return back to Chenek for overnight camping.  Total trekking time: 6-8 hours

DAY 8 : Chenek - Gonder

From Chenek we will drive down to Gonder. Overnight in a hotel in Gonder.

DAY 9 : Gonder - Addis

A half day city tour of Addis. Dinner will be in traditional restaurant with cultural live music. Overnight in hotel or depart to your country.

End of tour.
